About Pricing

You probably own a digital camera of some type. The most popular ones these days are point and shoot digital cameras, averaging in the $150-200 range. You probably snap some pictures with it from time to time, download them to your computer, and print them out as 4×6 glossy prints at Walgreens for fifty cents apiece. So you might have a degree of sticker shock when you take a look at the pricing of Professional Photographers, and wonder why it costs so much. I mean after all, you could take the family to the local Sears Portrait Studio and come out with a stack of pictures for a hundred bucks or so. Why in the world is it going to cost you many hundreds or even thousands of dollars to have a session with a Professional Photographer and get some pictures on the wall?
Professional Photographers are not chain stores. They are individual people/familes/couples who decided to pursue their art and start up a business. Each one is unique and has their own way of doing things and their own pricing. But some universal truths apply to all Professional Photographers.
1. We are businesses. That means that all money you pay your Professional Photographer doesn’t just leave your checkbook and fly directly into his or her pocket. We have taxes to pay, equipment to buy, payroll, perhaps studio overhead - a LARGE portion of the prices that we charge for our work goes toward business expenses. In fact, an in-depth survey by the PPA (Professional Photographers Of America) found that the most profitable home-based studios took home just 32% of their sales as profit, and retail based studios had an even lower profit rate of 28%. And that’s the *most* profitable businesses.
Let’s say that the ‘average’ Professional Photographer falls short of the most profitable businesses by about 20%, so the ‘average’ home-based Professional Photographer is taking home about 26% of sales.   In simple terms, that means that if you spent $1000 with your photographer for the session and your print choices, just $260 of the money you paid him ends up in his pocket.   The rest goes to all the other expenses involved in running the business.
2. We have a specific skill. If you are a chef at a restaurant, I respect that you have more skills and experience in cooking than I do. I can ask you what type of pans you like to use, and I can go out and buy the same kind of pans, and it doesn’t mean I will create a delicious complicated 7 course meal tonight. If you are a hairdresser, I respect that you have more skills and experience with cutting hair than I do. I can ask you what brand of scissors rocks your world, and I can go out and buy the same pair, but that doesn’t mean you should let me cut your hair.
Just because everyone can purchase a camera at a big box store doesn’t mean that photography is easy. It’s not. Like any other skill, it takes time, practice, experience – and a dose of talent doesn’t hurt either! The chef who has proven that he can cook incredible meals every night for ten years in a row probably commands more per plate at his restaurant – his expertise means that he doesn’t flip burgers for minimum wage. The same principle applies.   You trust professionals to cut your hair, operate on your gallbladder, and do your taxes – and it costs many times more to pay them to do it than it would cost to do it yourself (and I’m pretty sure you can’t operate on your own gallbladder no matter what!) You’re paying for the talent and skills that person has honed. It costs more. Most things that are worth having do.
3. We’re not getting our prints from Walgreens. Professional Photographers tend to be extremely picky about the product that they put in clients hands. It’s a reflection of their work, and it has to look fantastic. All products come from labs and vendors that cater specifically to Professional Photographers. The prints, canvases, frames, and other products we deliver to our clients are a higher quality than what is available to the general public – and it should be no surprise that they cost more too.    Is it worth it? Here’s a test for you – do you have any pictures of yourself or your family from say 20-30 years ago that were made at a chain portrait studio in a mall or superstore? Take a look at them. How do they look? Probably green, orange, or otherwise discolored, and likely faded. Do you know why? Because those portrait studios print on crappy paper. Using crappy ink and crappy printing processes. Professional labs produce high-quality prints that will stand the test of time, and that’s what Professional Photographers sell to you. I’ll say it again: It costs more. Most things that are worth having do.
4. Professional Photography is a very time intensive business. For every client that I work with, I spend time on: a phone consultation to determine their needs, doing paperwork to track the client and their session, driving to the session, shooting the session, driving home, downloading the images and choosing which ones I’ll show the client, processing those images, creating a slideshow and online shopping cart for them, an in-person sales appointment, designing custom items, ordering their products, unpacking and inspecting the prints when they arrive, packaging up the order, and either shipping or delivering the order.   If a photographer has staff, that’s great, they don’t do all of those tasks – but they have to pay someone else to do them.
In an informal survey amongst Professional Photographer friends, we estimate it takes between 6-10 hours of time for ONE session with ONE client. Which means that maybe we can only handle 4-5 clients a week and give them the top-notch customer service we pride ourselves on. What if a Professional Photographer only charged what the chain studios do, and each of those clients could get everything their hearts desired for $200? So the photographer would bring in $1000 for those five clients. Going back to the previous formula, remember that only 26% might end up in the Professional Photographer’s pocket - $260 take home pay for that week of work. That, my friends, comes out to $6.50 an hour – or less than minimum wage.
5. Professional Photography is an experience. Been to the doctor lately? They have about 7 minutes set aside per patient these days. You might not even be able to adequately explain your symptoms to your doctor before the clock winds down.    Got a newborn? Want pictures of that newborn? Well, babies fuss and cry and poop and need breaks to eat. Those things all take time. You don’t want the HMO version of a portrait session. You don’t want to feel rushed, worried that your baby will cry during your alloted 15 minutes and the pictures will be awful because THE CLOCK IS TICKING. Professional Photographers know that the best portraits are created when everyone is relaxed and unrushed.   Many Professional Photographers that I know set aside up to an hour and a half for each session – more for newborns. We’ve got time, so don’t be stressed.   There is no need to tell the kids that Santa won’t come if they don’t behave RIGHT NOW. After the session, you may be treated to an online slideshow, a personal ordering appointment, home delivery of your order, or many other perks. We want you to have a wonderful experience with your portraits. We want your kids to think it was fun. We want everyone to enjoy the entire experience, which is why we allot a nice chunk of time especially for you. The results will speak for themselves. I’m going to have to say it one more time: This costs more. Most things that are worth having do.
6. Professional Photography is a matter of priorities. I want to tell you a story that many Professional Photographers will be able to relate to. A client came into my studio to order her prints. She parked her very expensive SUV in front of my studio. She wore designer shoes, and carried a top-dollar handbag. She apologized for being late, she was waiting for the contractors who were building their new deck – they had enlarged the plans for the deck because her husband’s bonus check ended up being much higher than expected. She then proceeded to complain about the pricing of every.single.item on my price list. She was in a huff about an item that she wanted to give as a gift, but it cost $100 and she ‘just can’t afford that!’
Of course she can afford it. That’s obvious. It’s not about what she can afford, it’s about what she values. She loved my work, but she didn’t VALUE it. It can be a real challenge for Professional Photographers to find clients who value our artistry and understand that our pricing is not arbitrary – and certainly not designed to rip them off. Most Professional Photographers I know agonize over pricing, wanting to be profitable but concerned about scaring off clients.
Certainly, not every client is as well-off as the one I mentioned in that story. In fact, I have been fortunate to have clients that believe enough in what I offer that they save up to come to me. It’s important to these clients to have artistic, thoughtfully created images of their children, and they truly value the experience and products that a Professional Photographer can provide for them. It’s a joy and an honor to have a client think so highly of what I do.
For many families, spending $1000 or $2000 every year or two on portraits is definitely an investment. Professional Photographers do understand that. And we believe it is a worthwhile investment in your family. Between lattes, video games, and countless other ‘small purchases’, most families fritter away far more than that $1000 or $2000 each year on intangibles. Investing in high quality portraits that will be part of your family’s legacy is within reach for many families if they value Professional Photography and make it a priority.

Just keep in mind everything that goes in to those photos you will cherish forever. And these photos will go way beyond you. Your children and your children's children, and several generations to come. This truly is an INVESTMENT! Well. There has been a lot going on in my life since my last post. I got married, Tyler and I found out we're having a baby boy to add to our family of 2 beautiful little girls, and we're moving! We will be moving into a house in 2 weeks. What that means for us? That means an AMAZING fenced in back yard for the kids, and our puppy Oliver. It also means our own washer and dryer again (Finally!). However, it also means I will have to give up my current photography studio. It's been my home for the last 3.5 years, but to have a studio at the Armory, you have to live there. So I will be on the hunt for a new, and better space. The good news is though, that I will still be photographing my heart out. I couldn't give it up if I wanted to! ;) Though, I don't think I'll ever have to worry about wanting to, this is what I was born for! All of my studio equipment is portable, so I will be taking some studio sessions still, but they will be on location studio sessions. Which means, I will come to you, and set up my equipment, you will still get the studio look, but you won't even have to leave home! ;) I may even take a few sessions at my new home. And as always I will still be offering on location, natural light sessions. So that means, in your home, at the park, downtown, etc.

This will be the last week to book sessions in my current studio, next week I'm packing it all up. It's gonna be sad, but soooo worth it! Let me know if you want to set something up this week! :) I miss you all!

Okay, I've been dying to blog about this one for a while now. Seriously, I don't think it gets too much cuter than this.

I know this family really well, and I've been dying to get my chance to photograph these gorgeous little girls!
I did a Maternity Session for them a while back. So cute!

Big Sister was a little hesitant at first. She really didn't think she wanted to have her photo taken. I just had to warm her up a little bit, and then , it was a lot of fun from there.

You could tell she was happy to be a big sister!

See? I told you this would be fun! hehe.

Are you kidding me with those eyes? Stunning!

This one makes me giggle! All I can think is she's getting ready to do some Karate or something! lol

She must have been excited about getting her photo taken, cuz she was all smiles and super excited most of the time they were here!

And I'll leave you with her Baby Ballet! Her Momma loves this one, says it looks like she's actually dancing! Lol.

I was very lucky to get to photograph such gorgeous little girls! Maybe next time I'll get to do the whole family! :)

Blue Eyes and Lollipops!

So my amazing fair session with Kelli lead to a wonderful fair session with a gorgeous little man named Valen. His Mom Michelle saw Kelli's photos, and asked her about me. She got the brilliant idea that the fair would be the perfect place to get some incredible candid photos of Valen enjoying the fair. He had a birthday coming up, so it was time for some new photos anyways.

When we got there Valen wasn't really feeling it. But once we walked around for a minute, and he got to see the animals, he warmed up and we got some amazing shots of him, and his wonderful family.

See, I told you everyone loves Skee Ball! ;)

He wasn't so sure, however, about this drinking fountain lion!

His Mom had the excellent idea to bring along a lollipop. He wasn't sure what to do with it at first, it was as big as his head! lol

And then we wrapped it up with some cotton candy. Yum!

Bold and Beautiful

I work with Kelli, and she and my business partner Ashley had been planning on doing some form of a photo shoot for some time. Ashley asked if I wanted to photograph as well, and of course, I was all over it. So the three of us sat together and brainstormed ideas. Where would we go? What kind of shoot would we do? We ended up deciding we should do a shoot in the woods somewhere. Something different. We love Kelli. She allows us to be artistic. She trusts us, and when we ask her to do something crazy, she does it. No questions asked. So we had her bring her craziest outfits, and we set out to find a chair. Ashley managed to find one at a local resale store, and we were off.

Kelli laughs a lot. So do we. We love her for that!

I think this had to be my favorite shot that day. Amazing. Kelli should look into becoming a model full time! ;)

What you can't tell in these photos is that area we were in, it was pretty much a swamp, so it was full of mosquitoes. I mean, we were being attacked by swarms the WHOLE time.

Kelli was a trooper though. She just kept posing. So I had to get proof of our best investment that day. Not that it did us very much good.

As you can see, it was time for an outfit change. Kelli looks really amazing in her cowboy hat.

I love this one. It's surely a very close second in the favorites department.

So we had so much fun during this shoot, that we knew we had to do another. It was pretty much necessary. Plus, I think we created a modeling monster with Kelli. She's sort of addicted now! Lol. Which is good for us, she's amazing to work with.

Again with the brainstorming. I came up with the amazing idea to use the County Fair that just so happened to be opening. So what did we do? We made the shoot for just a few days later! We had a lot of fun with this one. People everywhere were stopping and staring. Poor Kelli! Lol. Everyone was wondering what on earth we were doing there walking around with all this equipment, photographing this gorgeous girl in High Heels! Lol.

Here's a good example of her amazing laugh. Which she does, often!

Who doesn't love Skee Ball? You find me someone... I dare ya! ;)

During this one, we're standing there for a bit, and the wind starts blowing. "Ugh, stupid wind" Kelli proclaims as she brushes her hair out of her face. "No, this is good wind, sexy wind" I replied.
"Sexy Wind?" Kelli looked at me like I was crazy, and we all laughed. Later when looking at the final images, she said "You were right, it was sexy wind!" And now it's a running joke between us!

These ones were my favorite from the fair shoot. Her outfit and that circus prop (believe it or not, it's a garbage can! hehe) went perfectly together.

My life around here has been pretty insane. I've had some pretty ill family members, a sick doggy, and a boyfriend with a broken hand. On top of all of that, I've been photographing a lot of really wonderful sessions. I apologize for my lack of blogging.

Summer Time and Cute Pets = Adorable Photos

Saturday was originally supposed to be the Summer Pet Photo Event, which I was really looking forward to, but I had to cancel it due to circumstances out of my control. However, I put my phone number on the door so that if anyone did happen to show up anyways, I could photograph their adorable pets!! Guess What? A few people showed up. Their photos were too cute not to share!

First I'm gonna share the adorable pics of my wonderful little guy! I took these a couple of weeks ago, but regardless, this is Oliver. I kinda love him!

I always get all these pet parents who tell me "Oh I don't know if this is gonna work, this dog probably isn't going to do well" the pets surprise them, and are always amazing! Haha, okay, maybe not really. I do, however, love me some Facebook! It's proven to be an excellent way to catch up with old friends. I just ran a Facebook Mini Session Special! What's that you ask? It's a mini 15 minute session for $10! You get at LEAST 5 photos to choose from! And you get to use them on your Facebook! It's a fun, interesting way to have an awesome Facebook profile photo, as well as feel awesome about yourself! I mean really, who doesn't love getting all dolled up for a photo session?

I booked all 10 sessions (that's how many I offered) within the first couple of hours after the post! It was such a success I'm seriously considering doing it again! So keep your eye out on the Facebook Page! Maybe you'll be next!!

Furry Friends in Costume!

So, Natty J Photography and I did the pet event at Mantis Pet Supply, and it went over fabulously! We had an excellent turn out, and raised lots of money for the Buster Foundation, a pitty rescue! I thought I should show you guys some of these amazing halloween pics! Seriously though, how to pick with ones to show? It was really hard to choose, they all turned out so well, but here are a few of my favorites!

This is Harmony, isn't she sweet? She just wanted to love on us the whole session!

And this is Sly trying to hide in the pumpkins! Seriously though, doesn't he look all "You can't see me"??

This one is Hunter, and his Mom did NOT think he was going to sit still well for us, but as you can see, he was perfect!

This has to be one of my favorite photos of all time! This was Miguel, and let me tell you, he did NOT want us anywhere near him! He just glared at us the whole time, but how suiting is this costume right?

And this one is just priceless! Snickers the witch wanted to take a ride on Sonya the Gargoyle!

This event was more successful than we could have hoped and we met some amazing people! We'll be back for Holiday Photos in December with Santa Paws! Come see us!!

... the cutest pumpkin, witch, k-9 officer, and pitbull you could ever see! Natalie and I, of Natty J. Photography, are doing a most adorable Halloween Pet Photos day at Mantis Pet Supply in Ypsi tomorrow and Tuesday! Exciting right? AND it's all to benefit the Buster Foundation, a pitbull rescue. Natalie was sweet enough to bring over her adorable Piglet so I could take some sample images! Who is cuter than this little guy? He was so patient and let us put all these costumes on him, and just sat there for us! What a great doggie! If you live in the area, bring out your pet! Any pet will do! We even have a request for a guinea pig! Haha! We'll be there from 10-6:30! Hope to see you there!!!

Sorry for the delay in blogs. I've been crazy busy, and all those sessions equal hours and hours of editing! lol.... Anyways, I promised Megan and her family I'd try and get a sneak peek up for them.

Well, Megan was soooo much fun! I went out to their beautiful home for the first half of this shoot. Their place was so incredible. They had lots of fun little places to sneak in photos. It really was a lot of fun! We had cats following us around for a good part of the shoot. We got to play with their adorable dogs, AND we got to feed their chickens! Fun right? lol I totally had to sneak in a few photos I snapped of the animals, because it became a running joke that I was probably going to end up with just as many photos of her animals, as I did of her! So here are just a few of the tons of photos we took, and, I'm looking forward to Thursday, when she comes down to the studio to do some more! See you guys then!

I always love when Senior Picture season starts to pick up. Seniors are soo much fun to photograph! Today, I had one of the most fun families I've had in a long time. I always get nervous when I get the guys. Most of the time they're so awkward and uncomfortable with having their photo taken, I never know what I'm going to get. Not this time though. He was up for whatever, and we had a lot of fun. I told the fam I'd try and get some sneak peeks up for them tonight... so here they are!

Little Miss Sofia

Well, I finally made it over to photograph little miss Sofia. You remember her maternity photos from last week? Well, when I got there, I was informed her gorgeous big sister Tiegan would not be joining us, as she was at the zoo with Grandma. Heartbreaking!

So little Miss Sofia was the most wide awake newborn I've ever met. I was there for a couple of hours, and this adorable little thing was awake the WHOLE time! Even after being fed and swaddled. She just had no interest in sleeping and missing out on the fun. She also was a pee-er. I mean, seriously! Every single time we laid her on a new blankie or a new surface, she just peed some more... lol. So none of the sweet baby sleeping photos for us this time. However, she loved making faces at me, and she was a lot of fun. Here are some photos from our session.

This one is funny... she was screaming her head off, and just calmed down long enough to pee, and call me crazy, but that looks like a smile! lol

I absolutely LOVE when I get the chance to do a Maternity Session! They are always so much fun. Recently I photographed the beautiful Ashley. I believe she was like 40weeks 6days pregnant, or something crazy like that! She was going in to get induced the next morning. I'm actually planning on heading out there this week to get some photos of the gorgeous new little one... Sofia, and her gorgeous big sister Tiegan!
